Individual music lessons

Individual lessons has been a principal activity of the School since opening. The Nelson School of Music has 60 accredited teachers offering the highest standard of tuition in a variety of instruments. We provide musical lessons to over 500 students annually. Music Lessons include theory and aural training and can be held in the school or sometimes at the music teachers home. Short term music lessons are available for specific occasions and individual tuitioin is available for personal advancement and enjoyment, or for preparation for examinations at all levels.

Music festival

The music festival has been successfully running for many years and is designed to cater for all music lovers. From classical to cabaret to comedy to jazz to dance - we want to offer memorable evenings with superb entertainment. Enjoy summer and all the exciting activities of the Summer Festival and Jazzfest and we will look forward to seeing you for our 2009 Winter Festival. The School of Music also supports and hosts other musical festivals such as the Adam Chamber of Music Festival (celebrating it's 10th anniversary in 2009).

IMPORTANT NOTICE

 

The Nelson School of Music auditorium has been classified as earthquake-prone by the Nelson City Council (Section 124 Notice under the Building Act 2004).

 

The Nelson School of Music has taken the decision to close its building and will not be reopening it for public use until earthquake-strengthening work has been completed. There will be a managed relocation and retrieval of items from the building in the New Year.

 

Alternative venues are being found for Nelson School of Music activities, which will continue during the period that the building is closed.

Our role within the Community

 

The Nelson School of Music is at the heart of the musical community, providing excellence in musical performance and education.

 

The Nelson School of Music provides services to the local community that help to meet many of the goals outlined in the long-term strategies of Nelson City and Tasman District Councils, including:

  • Careful management of an iconic Historic Places Trust category 1 heritage property with historical significance to the region – a building that is well-used and well-loved. Each year, more than 50,000 people participate in activities at the Nelson School of Music ranging from concerts to workshops, classes and tuition.
  • Attracting national and international artists, audiences, students and teachers to the region by providing a venue with outstanding acoustics in one of New Zealand’s most creative cities.  These people contribute to the local economy through accommodation, tourist activities, retail and hospitality and other purchases. 
  • Contributing to the creativity, vibrancy and community spirit of the region.  Music is recognised as a vital element in a community’s social development. Nelson School of Music helps to bring fun, festivity and a real sense of community to our region.
  • Providing the largest purpose-built performing arts venue in the region – home to many performing arts groups and events. Nelson School of Music works in partnership with Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology to offer qualifications up to Bachelor degree level in contemporary music.

Our Vision

 

The Nelson School of Music has a vision of being recognised as, "the hub of musical and performing art excellence in the Nelson Bays region."

 

  • Development of excellence in musical education;
  • Provide a venue for and delivery of viable performances, events, workshops and classes;
  • Coordinate collaborative administration and marketing of Nelson's performing arts venues (the Virtual Performing Arts Network);
  • Develop usable and commercially sustainable musical facilities on the Rainey House site to complement the existing facility.
